The big town in County Bistriţa-Năsăud is,
perhaps not surprisingly, the city of Bistriţa with
a population of about 90,000.
There are no
other cities in the county of just over 300,000 people, although the three
towns of Beclean, Năsăud, and Sāngeorz-Băi are sizeable. There are
56 communes and at least as many villages in County
Bistriţa.

Geography
County Bistriţa is bordered by fellow Transilvanian counties of Cluj
to the west and Mureş to the south, and by the
Bucovina region to the east and Maramureş to the
north.
The county has a total area of 5, 355 km². One third of this surface
represents the mountains from the Eastern Carpathians group: the Ţibleş,
Rodna, Suhard, Bārgău and Călimani Mountains. The rest of the surface
represents the North-East side of the Transylvanian Plateau.
The main river crossing the county is the Someşul Mare River. On the
Bistriţa River there is a big dam and a lake.
Population and Demographics
In 2002, it had a population of 311, 657 and the population density
was 58/km².
Romanians make up 90% of the population. There is also an important
minority of Hungarians of about 6% of the population. There was also a
German population, which, due to migration, decreased. There are also
communities of Roma (Gypsies). The big town in
County Bistriţa-Năsăud is, perhaps not surprisingly, the city of
Bistriţa. There are no other cities in the
county, although the three towns of Beclean, Năsăud, and Sāngeorz-Băi are
